Kat Nance never expected her dog, Lil’ Max, to become an internet sensation. What started as a way to cope with postpartum depression turned into a journey of healing, faith and connection. Today, Max’s funny expressions and unique personality have won hearts around the world. We speak to Kat about their special bond, motherhood and how one little dog changed her life.

Could you tell us a little about yourself and your journey so far?
Kat Nance: "It’s been an incredible journey. I started posting our family dog, Lil’ Max, online during a difficult episode of postpartum depression last year. Against all odds, our formerly stray puppy has been going viral ever since. It turns out he is a fantastic actor and content creator, and he genuinely loves nothing more than the spotlight. It’s been a massive blessing for our family and for our Maxtok family around the world."
How did you and Lil’ Max find each other?
Kat Nance: "Lil’ Max was originally a stray puppy who appeared on a woman’s doorstep in a very rural area of central Mississippi. He was starving and covered in fleas and ticks, and nobody could figure out where he had come from. After changing homes a few times, my husband adopted him about six months before we met. When my husband and I got married and I became a stay-at-home mum, Lil’ Max and I became best friends. I think I’m the mum he never had."
He was definitely exactly who I needed during my darkest times. He never left my side.
Lil’ Max has such a remarkably human-like expression. Do you believe in reincarnation or the idea that souls can find each other across different lifetimes?
Kat Nance: "We always laughed about how human-like his face was, but after living with him for a while, we all got used to it. Once we started posting him online, we were reminded just how much he looks like a little child and how human his expressions can be. I suppose anything is possible with God, so maybe he was someone else at some point! Haha."

There’s a theory that the dogs who come into our lives were perhaps meant to be our children, finding their way to us in a different form. What do you think about this idea?
Kat Nance: "If Lil’ Max was sent to me as a soul-child or a gift, I think that’s a beautiful thought. I believe God works in mysterious ways, sometimes in ways we can’t begin to understand. Max was definitely exactly who I needed during my darkest times. He never left my side, and he still doesn’t to this day."
What is it like to navigate life as both a human mum and a dog mum? How do you balance these two special roles, and what has each taught you about love and motherhood?
Kat Nance: "Being the manager and mum of a dog who thinks he’s human, while also raising two small humans, is extremely chaotic and extremely beautiful at the same time. I wish I could tell you that I balance everything perfectly, but I don’t. I simply accept the chaos, say a prayer and keep going. I wouldn’t be able to do any of this without my incredibly supportive husband. He and our family have always made sure I have more than enough support with the children, and I’m deeply grateful for that."
I simply want to make the world laugh and smile and share him with people.
You’ve spoken openly about experiencing severe postpartum depression. How did Lil’ Max help you navigate that difficult period in your life?
Kat Nance: "Even though my husband was Max’s first real owner, he became completely inseparable from me after I had my children. He follows me everywhere and rarely wants to be in a different room. Sometimes he’ll cry and whine until he can be near me. Even when I wanted to be alone, he was always there to cuddle me. He has literally licked tears off my face. I love him so much!"

How did the idea of creating an account for Lil’ Max come about? Did you ever imagine it would grow into what it is today?
Kat Nance: "During one of my lowest points, I was praying and trying to find some relief. I felt God tell me in my heart, ‘I’m going to give you a platform for the whole world.’ I know that might sound a little crazy, but it’s true. I didn’t receive any further explanation, which was confusing because I really didn’t want to be seen or post myself at that time. So I started posting Max instead.
He may even send you a dog with a human face. He has a great sense of humour, you know.
I had no idea he would go viral. I genuinely could never have expected or prepared for what happened, but I’m so grateful. God definitely had something beautiful in mind. I can’t tell you how many people message me saying that Lil’ Max has helped them deal with grief, depression and addiction. Some have even told me he helped them find God again, which is music to my ears. Regardless of anyone’s beliefs, everyone is welcome. I simply want to make the world laugh and smile and share him with people."
In a world where there is so much pressure to fit in and meet expectations, do you find it difficult to stay true to yourself? What has that meant for you?
Kat Nance: "It’s actually not difficult for me to be open and truthful about my Christian faith. Sometimes it bothers people, and sometimes it makes me less likely to land brand deals. I fully accept those consequences. I already have the greatest gift a person can have: knowing Jesus. If I told you how many times God has saved my life, we’d be here all day!"
What would you love to give back to your community? Is there a message, a feeling or a cause you hope to share with the people who follow your journey?
Kat Nance: "The most important message I would share with my community is this: if you’re in a dark place, at least stay open to the possibility that things can get better. At its heart, depression can make you believe that the horrible feelings you’re experiencing will never change, but that simply isn’t true. Keep an open mind about the possibility that your life could change in ways you never expected. And who knows? You might find God along the way. He may even send you a dog with a human face. He has a great sense of humour, you know."
